Video my father took on a business trip in 1990. Aircraft I've been able to identify: Continental 747-200 American Airlines 737-200 (ex Air Cal) Alaska Airlines 727-200 Continental MD-80 America West 737-300 AirBC Dash 8 Japan Air Lines 747-200 Northwest 747-200 Delta L-1011 Horizon F-28 Canadian Dash 7
Miss Those L- 10s
I miss the Trijets !!
Was that an American Airlines 737-200 at the beginning?
Ah dc 8 and 727 are missed especially the 727 when fedex retired the last one in 2012/13
vintage airplanes build during the 60's and 70's
you was alive
Delta I thought got some DC-9s when the merged with Northwest? Have the retired them as well?
+stitch16261 Delta had yet to take over Northwest when I uploaded the video, and those DC-9s have now been gone since early 2014.
oh man delta doesnt have that anymore
great video of a bygone era...love the roar of the engines but a background audio suggestion would be juice newton, angel of the morning. thanks for sharing
The Continental 737 at the end of the video has those extra air intake/vent things on its engines, just aft of the nacelles. Haven't seen too many of those! The plane looks kinda stubby too...even stubbier than the -200! Might it be a -100?? I know that boeing didn't build a ton of -100s, but i think that continental got their hands on a few of 'em b4 they expired. Awesome vid! thx for sharing
I was thinking the same thing. I think it is a 737-100
+bestpilot98 Looks like a 737-100 inherited from the PeopleExpress merger. The vents were, as far as I know, standard on all earlier JT8Ds on the 737 and they provided additional intake air at high power settings. The 737-200ADV sported redesigned intakes that eliminated the need for them.
ahhhh....barely a winglet in sight...and jt8d's all over the place...I know what I'm doing when someone finally invents a time machine
Back in the pre hushkit days
You can say that...
That runway close to the trees reminds me of SJU airport (munoz marin) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Delta retired their original DC-9s in 1993, then re-inherited a big fleet of them from Northwest in 2008.
This is fantastic!!!
We still have Delta DC-9s
I wish Delta would have kept their old logo.
the L10 and MD 11's are also Gone !! .... Im glad my parents worked for Delta During the Time these Great Airplanes were in Service !!!! .. I MISS THESE PLANES A LOT !!! And ASA had Prop Engine Planes !!!! .... and Eastern Express Airlines was bought by cotenental
Gone are the days when you could get that close to planespot at Hartsfield...now you have to go to the North terminal parking deck...and you don't get that great a view....or rent a room at the hotel by the runway....
I only got to see what I call the true golden days (ending at about this period) of jet aviation as a little kid...they came to an end right around the end of the 1990s. I was about four years old at the time this video was made and remember when STL was 727 heaven.
Delta flies DC-9s again!
I've had many arrivals and departures at Hartsfield International.
@usafisasome u forgot the R
UPS still flies the DC-8, i was in new orleans two days ago and we had to hold short of the runways because a UPS DC-8 was taking off and last time i was there, i saw one land while waiting for my plane to get there
@JedHowe Lorenzo should be in a Turkish Prison.
Thank you for posting this. I worked at Sea-Tac in 1990. Best times of my life.
Couldn't be more impressed. What a look back!
wow! the 737-100, awesome sight, GREAT video!
Nothing like the roar of a Pratt&Whitney Engine!
Great footage of ATL back in the good ole' days.Classic airliners, flying in classic colors! Love older footage like this! Thanks for sharing!
Where were you filming/standing ??
love the dc-8 and dc-9 sounds
Dang these are old planes!!!
The taxing in of the DL L1011 almost brought me to tears
Wonderful work, taking me back to the last of the great days. We saw such a variety of aircraft in the early 90's, please let me kno where I can find more.
You brought back great memories!.My best times while at Delta. Thanks for posting!
Some good footage on a warm, breezy day at ATL. BTW, the Continental Boeing 737, the one departing at the end of the clip, is a real rarity. It is a 100 series model! First in the fleet of Lufthansa, this jet was acquired by PeopleExpress, then became a Continental jet after Frank Lorenzo's CO bought out PE. The resulting labor strife nearly shut down the USA's entire aviation system. At least Continental fared better in the long term than did Eastern.
cool planes bro..we never see these Air Lines on this side of the Pole..so quite an amazing view! Love it.
No, I only listed the airliners that are no longer flying with those airlines. At the time I uploaded this, UPS was still flying DC-8s. I also didn't list the Delta MD-88s.
U FOEGOT THE DC-8
Thanks for the memories! 5/5!! The only video of a 737-100 I've ever seen on UA-cam! I never did fly on a Tristar, but Ioved the DC-10!!
20 akshually
well, at least delta got the dc-9s back =)
God I love those old jets...!!! And I always will !!! 5/5 & fav!
wow that was truly amazing, like a trip back in time!
This must have been shot weeks before Eastern shutdown.
People do......i do...esp close to a restricted area fence close to runway thresh hold. As long as you are NOT in a restricted are, you're fine
i was hoping to see a pan am aircraft
damn. old school to say the least. continental airlines 747 most likely going to tokyo. they havent operated that flight for years. old livery too. jal hasent flown here for damn near 20 years as well.
Both actually. The one at the beginning is indeed an MD-80 (I only tagged the birds no longer being operated), but the one on approach later is a DC-9, as indicated by the shorter fuselage and cone tail fairing. Delta operated DC-9-32s up until 1993 I believe (ironically, they now operate DC-9s again after the NWA merger, only they're the -51s now).
